Ranger fans who don’t also root for the Knicks (you all should, they’re turning a corner!) are completely ignoring the Dolan factor in all this. Blindly trusting whatever NYR PR puts out there is ridiculously naive. Dolan is known to be maybe the most paranoid owner in sports.
He is petrified of bad press. MSG is a fortress, and the PR teams for both the Knicks and Rangers are notoriously slow to respond to criticism or jump into any discussion beyond the usual bland on-court/ice stuff.
There’s no doubt that he is fully involved in the Deangelo stuff now. It was on the back page of the Post. Anything the Rangers say is going to be the absolute thinnest version of the “truth” and designed to prevent further bad press from happening.
This is a long way of saying, whatever the organization has said, confirmed, denied, or leaked to friendly media (like Boomer Esiason) should not be taken at face value.
