trying not to be the old guy, but is the public at large as aware of norah odonnell/david muir/lester holt as the network anchorpeople of note the way that we did with brokaw/rather/jennings? my inclination is to say its not even close.
up until well into my 20s i was a devotee of the nightly network news broadcasts. my mom and i used to watch peter jennings, and when i was on my own i flipped to being a brokaw watcher. it was a strange proposition: in 30 minutes we will tell you the news that matters.
those broadcasts left a lot on the cutting room floor, but i feel one thing they did that modern news doesnt do much is report on the rest of the world, even a little bit. americans are woefully uninformed about whats happening on the outside.
we are constantly blindsided by intl news - like burma today - and i feel like this is national news refusing to give us any international news peas with our domestic news junk food.
we've been at war in afghanistan for over 20 years now. and it barely ever makes the news, and that's usually only in relation to its effect on the troops.
yes, people arent interested in intl news, but we're the only superpower left and our country is connected to dozens of others, both militarily and economically. if something's going down it affects us and we should be aware of it.
and i mean reporting even on countries where its really easy for an american network to report on - like england. not to mention reporting on africa and asia and the rest of europe.
