It has come to light, as many have learned over the weekend, that Facebook has offered preferential access to information about the activities of its Oversight Board a small subset of individual academics, some of whom have then rushed into print lengthy commentary.
No matter where one falls on the question of whether or not it matters that some anointed few have early and/or preferred access to embargoed information about the OSB and its workings...
the key point is how that reflects back on the claims of Facebook that the OSB be understood to be wholly separate from its own corporate agenda.
They simply cannot have it both ways. Manipulating the discourse around the OSB severely impugns these claims and _that_ ought to be pointed out. @FBoversight @safiyanoble @carolecadwalla @mariaressa
And please do rest assured that this strategy of providing access absolutely has an expectation component to it — whether or not the subset included agrees or participates. That is absolutely Facebook’s goal and agenda.
