Within the living memory of many of the people leading this nation the United States was not a democracy; they were raised in a country & by people for whom that state of affairs was, if not ideal, normal. And the Voting Rights Act was still 5 yrs away when those heroes sat down.
When Pres Obama was elected, I tried to explain to my kids the enormity of the fact that when their President was born, his parents could've been arrested for being married in (iirc) 27 states. The past isn't dead - it isn't even past.
