Since the early days of the pandemic, I was struck by how much Cuomo's behavior, both in public and behind the scenes, reminded me of his handling of the MTA crisis in 2017. I'm afraid to say that continues to be true.
As @jdavidgoodman and co report, experts are fleeing vital public health positions, chafing under Cuomo's anti-intellectual approach. It is chillingly reminiscent of the talent exodus from the MTA after Byford did the same. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/01/nyregion/cuomo-health-department-officials-quit.html
As with the MTA, Cuomo's camp are painting this as a case of his "leadership" pushing staid bureaucracies into action. It's a good line, but it's not what I heard at the MTA. He's just a bully who has never heard a good idea that didn't come out of his own mouth.
Cuomo has a Nelson Muntz-esque conception of leadership, and it makes retaining talented leaders below him nearly impossible. There's a reason This Fucking Guy shows up everywhere in his admin despite his only qualification being Chief Cuomo Sycophant.
In short, more people have died in New York than any other state from the pandemic. There are many reasons for that. But the first rule of NY State politics is Andrew Cuomo always has to be the hero. And that's not a good rule for saving lives.
