The Trump admin’s contracts with CVS & Walgreens to send vaccination teams to nursing homes & other facilities is an utter disaster. Tying up far more doses than needed beyond the reach of state & local officials, yet still failing to reach many facilities anywhere near on time. https://twitter.com/aruby_/status/1356247236154449923
Many of the doses “sitting on shelves” appear to be on shelves owned by CVS & Walgreens & subject to restrictions imposed by federal contracts. They’re beyond the control of state governments, but governors are getting blamed.
Meanwhile, governors under pressure to improve their ratios are using an ill-advised shotgun approach to get the doses that *are* under their control into any readily available arm, rather than actively deploying mobile teams to hotspots where vaccination is most urgently needed.
The Biden admin must immediately direct CVS/Walgreens to transfer control of doses to state health depts & support their efforts to reach the nursing home facilities that are still waiting, while redirecting the significant overage to hard-hit worksites & neighborhoods.
