Our fanbase can’t seem to grasp this idea of failure to implement a system and a failure to execute it.

It is assumed that at all times players abide properly by their roles, but this simply isn’t the case, as certain players have certain tendencies. [1]
For example - Solskjaer asks wingers to hold the width and track back, covering the FB’s allowing them to bomb on if needed, and drawing out defenders creating space.

Failure to execute:

Greenwood is a ST, likes to cut inside and doesn’t hold the width, doesn’t track back. [2]
This could result in a lack of defensive cover, and difficulty creating space up front due to a narrower pitch meaning it’s harder to break teams down.

This is just an example, but it illustrates the point quite well [3]
So why is this important?

Well this is important when we talk about certain types of players, their attributes, and recruitment.

It’s very simple to say “we have good players, play them” but in reality a manager must have players that fit into his system [4]
When Solskjaer wanted a winger, it’s not because we need a player who can score goals and is talented, we needed a player who has the attributes of a winger to fit our system: holding the width, tracking back, not selfish in decision making

[5]
When Solskjaer wants a CDM it’s not because we don’t have players who can tackle, but it’s because we need someone who has good positioning, is comfortable when pressed, has good passing, and can control the tempo of a game. [6]
When we need a ST it’s not because Martial can’t score goals.. I could go on and on.

This is why a manager needs THEIR players for THEIR system.

It’s not as simple as “___ is a good player” and “___ is a bad player”

Solskjaer has yet to get these players, and it’s cost us [7]
Against many teams, especially top 6, we can’t keep the ball for extended spells or control the tempo of the game due to our lack of a proper CDM.

We can’t break teams down well when players make the wrong decisions on the wings, don’t stick to their roles etc. [8]
Without the proper player recruitment consistency will always be difficult. Ole often tries to patch these issues tactically, but then is criticised for chopping and changing systems.

This is why managers need time to build their squad and buy the right players for their teams
I don’t feel Ole has had that opportunity yet, which is why I am not surprised when we have unexpected results or poor spells.

This is one of the reasons that for me patience is really important. We can see glimpses of what Ole is building but we’re not their yet.

End of ramble
