Davis County, UT, where I grew up, has the same case rate as San Diego County. Here, our schools are closed indefinitely. There, kids are going to school four full days a week. Teachers are enforcing mask rules. Quarantine procedures are in place if kids get sick. 1/
It’s working well. The kids are happy and learning. High schools have had to shut down a few times, but elementary schools have had little disruption. When I think about the experience my kids could be having there in contrast to the drudgery of Zoom school it makes me angry. 2/
@sdschools can’t tell us when we can expect to return to school. There is no date. I’m already hearing murmurs that school could still be online in the fall. And why? Because we keep moving the goal posts about what is necessary to consider reopening “safe.” 3/
Even the promise of a vaccine doesn’t seem to be enough. Many teachers won’t commit to taking it, and the district won’t require it. So where does that leave us? Without answers. Without a plan. Kids failing. Their futures fading. 4/
We can’t wait for the pandemic to be over to reopen schools. It’s not going to just end. COVID will be with us for years. The district needs to start adapting to a new reality. We can’t keep waiting for perfect - it will never come. Just set a date and open the damn schools. 5/5
