It's difficult to keep up with *everything* that is going on especially underneath a pandemic & while we overcome our individual struggles, but all I ask is that you give what's happening in India a quarter of the attention you give America/Biden/etc
Today, @Twitter withheld @thecaravanindia, the best source for investigative journalism in India. You can access it internationally, but people within India cannot see it nor can The Caravan tweet from it (unless through a VPN).
The Caravan also did not receive a notification when @TwitterIndia received the request to withhold their account. It comes on the back of the social media giant withholding a number of accounts that are crucial in the ongoing farmer protests.
These protests, which are the world’s largest ever in recorded history, are led by farmers and continuing despite recent crackdowns and the rising authoritarian government’s violence against those that feed them.
Not only is this a continuation of the draconian rule under Modi but it’s par for the course. The internet has been shut down over 400 times in the last five years under the Modi regime.
Journalists are currently being jailed - or entire publications' speech is suppressed - while Modi's cronies (state tv) push propaganda news to fit their narrative.
This is, supposedly, the world's largest democracy. Global North publications across the spectrum continue to ignore the plight of a billion people underneath what is fast becoming a dictatorship.
With international support continuing for Modi, especially from Global North countries like the UK, the fear that many have is that democracy will dissolve in the country and when repercussions come, it will be too late.
(I'm just tired of having to bang on a drum to try and write about India in publications because American imperialism has sucked us in and distracted us all to the point where we can't see how crony capitalism runs every facet of the world and it's all connected)
(I also don't want to take away from what's happening in Uganda, China, Brazil, Nigeria, Mexico and so many other places. I just want us all to start paying attention to how all the dots are connected and care a bit more and stop giving Am*erica so much importance.)
