On this toilet consultation. Does anyone know
- How long it's open for?
- Who has driven it?
- What power the building regulations actually have here?
I am once again reminding you that reacting to every bad noise and dog whistle with "This is terrible! They're trying to destroy trans people! It's URGENT that allies spam their inbox NOW!" is a tactic with very diminishing returns, and the returns were tiny to begin with.
The effect of a copy/paste email campaign is that there will be one sentence in a consultation review that says "we had this many identical emails from one side and this many identical emails from the other". Then they do what they want to do anyway.
A building regulations consultation cannot stop trans people using the toilets they choose, legally or practically. What it might be able to do is discourage gender neutral toilet provision, by messaging or *maybe* regulatory barrier.
If you're campaigning on this, please provide clear information about what the regulations can actually do, sourced in research, not scaremongering about what the messaging might do.
If you're running a letter-writing campaign, give people the research and resources to write their own letter. Give them a structure where they are strongly encouraged to fill in blanks with personal testimony and their own research as a priority. Discourage copy/pastes.
Hint: if your selling point for an action is "It only takes 30 seconds!", that indicates the action has absolutely minimal effect. How can you build people's capacity to act for change, rather than make them feel they've done their bit by clicking a button?
And again: always leading with urgency, panic and crisis exhausts the people organising the campaign, exhausts the activist base, consumes attention, and exhausts allies. Trans liberation is a long, long struggle. Take some time to work out strategies that work.
