Marketing is never same as PR or Advertising.
You know right?
Let’s look at it as a family tree, Marketing is the foundation, it’s basically all efforts that’ll lead to sales or growth.

Marketing is concerned with the entire process that goes into creating and promoting in order to make sales of a product or service.
It includes efforts that goes into market and customer research, establishing roots in building a brand and audience, and everything that’ll lead to growth.

Then under the marketing tree you have efforts that collaborates marketing efforts and they include PR and Advertising.
Public relations (PR) is bothered with sharpening perception and image of a brand, business or individual through the strategic management of the relationships between the person/people in mention & the public.
Activities that PR concerns itself with includes:
- Press
- Strategic Communications
- Public Engagement (Stakeholder
- Customer-Brand Relationship Building.

All these efforts are geared at establishing positive relationship between a brand/person and an audience.
An area you’ll need PR in is in cases where a brand is dealing with a public brand crisis, so for damage control, PR efforts are employed.
Advertising on the other hand includes all activities that’ll help amplify a brand, it’s product, service etc.
In marketing there are 7 Ps, one of the Ps is Promotion and that’s what advertising does.
So when next you need to define your role or explain what you do or understand what you want to do, understanding what marketing, PR and advertising is will help you be more definitive.
