To kick off #BlackHistoryMonth
, me in @TeenVogue talking about @janellecj #BlackWomenBest, which says:
America centering Black women [in our economy] is a win for everybody cc @MsPackyetti @AyannaPressley @MsLaToshaBrown @staceyabrams. A thread/ https://www.teenvogue.com/story/black-women-best-economy

#BlackWomenBest says because Black women are worse off economically than basically everyone, by helping Black women, you help everyone. Black women right now:
- Have the most student debt
- Have one of the largest pay gap
- Deal with more rent evictions
- Need higher stimmys

- Need higher stimmys
So where has #BlackWomenBest worked? No further than the Georgia Runoff elections @MsLaToshaBrown @staceyabrams.
Black women centered themselves and in turn centered everyone else. As @MsPackyetti put it: When Black people win, everybody wins. And she is absolutely right.

Another place #BlackWomenBest has worked? The #BlackLivesMatter
movement, co-founded by three Black women: @aliciagarza @opalayo @OsopePatrisse.
Black women said OUR lives matter and advocated for justice and that justice fought for benefitted others. https://www.ted.com/talks/alicia_garza_patrisse_cullors_and_opal_tometi_an_interview_with_the_founders_of_black_lives_matter?utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=tedspread

We've been talking A LOT about student debt cc @AyannaPressley @AOC.
Black women, the group that everyone praises for "saving democracy", is also the group that carries the highest student debt. You want to thank us? Forgive our debt. https://twitter.com/AyannaPressley/status/1351602827504750595?s=20

Here is another not so fun fact: In the month of December, close to 80,000 JOBS were lost by BLACK WOMEN ALONE. In fact, it looks like white women actually GAINED jobs.
Why is this bad? Entire communities rely on Black women. https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/08/economy/women-job-losses-pandemic/index.html

Last not so fun fact: Remember how the federal government was supposed to give small businesses money because isssapandemic?
Turns out minority owners didn't get that money and that means in turn BLACK WOMEN who are the majority of minority-women owners didn't get that money.

BUT THERE'S HOPE: @janellecj the person who coined #BlackWomenBest just got appointed as CHIEF ECONOMIST of @USDOL.
In other words, she's overseeing Job Recovery in our country. This is a VERY VERY good thing for not just BW, but for everyone. https://moguldom.com/332190/5-things-to-know-about-spelman-alumna-janelle-jones-new-chief-economist-at-labor-department/

Another HOPE filled outcome: @CeciliaERouse, another Black woman economist, is in charge of the group of economists that ADVISE THE PRESIDENT.
She's been a champion for equity and diversity in jobs and education. This is a WIN for everyone. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/01/business/cecilia-rouse-biden-economist.html

ANOTHER HOPE: @joelle_gamble, who has fiercely advocated for better working conditions for EVERYONE and who believes our economic system needs to fundamentally change.
Guess what's she's doing? She is @POTUS right-hand economics advisor. A WIN. https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2021/01/10272968/biden-white-house-communications-policy-team

I will end with this: "The only way forward [in America] is with Black women not as the saviors of democracy, but as the beneficiaries of it." #BlackWomenBest

All month, I will be hopefully speaking and writing about #BlackWomenBest alongside @Groundwork to share why #BlackWomenBest needs to become part of the lexicon of American policy.
In the meantime, required listening from @kairyssdal @janellecj: https://www.marketplace.org/2020/11/23/are-black-women-being-centered-in-this-economy-yet/
