Playful jokes between #medtwitter specialties are ok.
Abuse is not. Here’s just some of the #dermatology hate I’ve received recently.
This abuse is just idiotic, but perhaps there’s a broader point about how we interact between specialties. THREAD/

Most of my #dermatology tweets get a response of ‘all you use is steroids, right?’ Or ‘if it’s dry make it wet etc’.
I don’t mind this, I’ve written enough inter-specialty jokes. But every time it’s the same & people think they’re the 1st to say it.

This stuff matters. Students are watching. Most derm trainees or interested students will have had the ‘you want to do dermatology? Really? That’s a waste’ chat a few times. I’m sure it’s the same for other specialties.
(Not comparing this to the abuse, btw!)

I’m working on a study on professional identity in redeployment and (spoiler alert) most of our trainees experienced prejudicial or ‘stereotyped’ attitudes & behaviours when redeployed.
“You can’t do that, you’re just a dermatologist”
“Where are your handbags?”

I’m not going to justify why derm is awesome here - it just is. But maybe next time you speak to a speciality you’ve not seen in a while - ask them what they do. Learn about their subspecialties (there are loads!) & best part of their job.
If you’re a student interested in #dermatology or a similar specialty, DM me or others & ask what we get up to - there’s way more than eczema & psoriasis out there & it’s the best specialty in the world

Or at least, #medtwitter, come up with another joke that doesn’t involve steroids or making it dry or wet!!!
