Here’s a clinical overview of acne vulgaris.
I’ll try to keep it as simple as possible but I’ll be using a lot of clinical terms . This isn’t to throw you off balance but to make you realize how serious and clinical acne is .
Now say with me, ACNE IS A CHRONIC SKIN DISEASE.
The word DISEASE shouldn’t scare you . You’re safe, so smile for me.😀
Simply put uneasiness of the skin/body= DIS-EASE . Acne even though it’s major cause isn’t super clear yet, is a skin condition linked to a number of factors which I’d break down in subsequent tweets below.
Acne has an underlying mechanism linked to the following ;
1. An obstruction and inflammation of the pilosebaceous units
2. Oversecretion of androgen during puberty in both genders which leads to hyper proliferation of keratinocytes& sebum production
3. Hormonal changes due to;
...pregnancy, menstrual cycle, hormonal imbalances in women which lead to conditions like PCOS(Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)& Virilizing adrenal tumors .
4. Colonization/over secretion of follicles by cutibacterium acne( a bacteria present on the skin)
The plenty english above is to bring you to a place of understanding that ACNE IS MOSTLY INTERNAL . It’s not something you really have control over/can have by being dirty( we’ll come back to this lie later). You can trigger it’s release by wrong practices/ mismanagement.
Someone’s thinking , what’s the difference between acne and pimples ? Lol I’d answer that in a bit . Keep reading please.
Acne vulgaris is the commonest type of acne. A few others include but are not limited to; acne inversa(hidradenitis supprativa), acne conglobata, acne fulminans & rosacea fulminans.
All forms of acne need help of a professional. An esthetician/a dermatologist. I’d recommend both
Our focus today would be on ACNE VULGARIS.
It’s divided into SIX types of which are in TWO categories ;
• Non-inflammatory acne also known as comedonal acne include ;
1. Black heads
2. White heads
• Inflammatory acne include ;
3. Papules
4. Pustules
5. Nodules
6. Cyst
Comedonal acne are the mildest forms of acne
For black heads, you have plugged pores on skin surface that are open while white heads are plugged pores on closed surface. FYI, black heads do not mean your skin is dirt-filled. It takes on that color ‘cause acne has mixed with air.
Papules are acne called pimples🤩 .Why? They’re small reddish/pinkish bumps that appear on your skin. Pustules are papules with a whitish pus in them. It’s important to note that white heads not managed well degenerate into a papule then a pustule . Both are moderate acne.
Nodules are large degenerate pustules with painful lump underneath the skin. While Cysts are nodules with pus and are chronic forms of acne vulgaris.
Acne conglobata is also a chronic form of acne vulgaris. Again, acne is a clinical condition & requires professional help.
I’d share MYTHS surrounding acne, why your acne isn’t improving& how to manage acne tomorrow. So skincare babies, the next time a random walks up to tell you hogwash about acne on your skin,tell them to take several seats ‘cause you won’t stress over what you can’t control.❤️
