Seems there's new drama on the TL with people equating a catchphrase with a character's essence and core. I don't know why ppl are so adamant or proud of exposing their ignorance, superficiality & outright hatred for these characters. A catchphrase is NOT what makes a character.
Its just a phrase, nothing more. Characters need character, not phrases, not undies, not buzzwords, CHARACTER. And they get it by being put in situations that require them to struggle, rise & overcome. Failure, growth, regret, lack of choice, frustration are all part of character
Character builds characters, catchphrases do not, unless the character has NO CHARACTER beyond the catchphrase and that's only possible if said character is closer to or a cartoon. Having character brings complexity to bear, having a catchphrase brings literally NOTHING of note.
The lack of "My name is Bond...James Bond" will never stop the character from being James Bond as long as he has the essential traits of british superspy, 007 designation and a gun. Nothing else matters, everything else is up for re-interpretation. But putting that catchphrase--
-ahead of every other concerns for the character's presentation will invariably result in a cartoonish character thats nothing like James Bond.
Affleck never used any of Batman's catchphrases but it didn't stop him being the best Batman ever. Bc he carried an essence of character
--that buzzword/phrase will never touch.
And its the film Cavill used a boring, superficial & overrated Superman line that he came off cartoonish & devoid of character. Bc that line & other surface level BS was put ahead of every other real consideration for his character/story.
