Brace yourselves, the “I/we love Black people” performance art is about to begin. A 🧵👇🏾...

(Note: I’m aware of the irony of the gif. It was chosen intentionally.)
#BlackHistoryMonth begins tomorrow, which means that like with #MLKDay , some of the same folks who can’t bring themselves to say or believe #BlackLivesMatter will be doing their posting/sharing/tweeting performance art about recognizing #BlackHistory. 2/x
It’ll be along the lines of something something Rosa Parks, blah blah blah Shirley Chisholm, blasé blasé Nelson Mandela, etcetera etcetera Elijah McCoy, example example Frederick Douglass, words words words Thurgood Marshall, yadda yadda Maya Angelou & so forth w/memes & quotes.
Then off they’ll go, satisfied & self-congratulatory at their momentary blip of recognition of #BlackExcellence while missing the eons of Black History & accomplishment across the diaspora,... 4/x
...often ignoring the content of what any of the people they temporarily uplift said/wrote/did & completely ignoring the persistent struggle for #BlackJustice (especially in the U.S.)... 5/x
...while simultaneously maintaining, upholding, & practicing #SystemicRacism (especially against Black people) evident & ever-present in policies at work, in schools, institutions, & government all the way to their personal interactions in their daily lives. 6/x
During this 2021 #BlackHistoryMonth , I challenge those folks to not just be merely performative but to do these 3️⃣ basic things: 7/x
1️⃣ Be actionable in fully learning about, understanding & celebrating Black History especially when told by & from Black voices (and not just during the shortest month of the year)
8/x
2️⃣ Work to dismantle #SystemicRacism & #InstitutionalizedRacism & replace both with #AntiRacist policies & practices that are intentionally centered in justice & equity

3️⃣ Unequivocally & with great conviction say & believe that #BlackLivesMatter . 9/9 fin.
