Indie devs: don't let your imposter syndrome hold you back. Everyone has it. By any measure #thelongdark has been an incredible success esp. considering our modest origins, and I wake up every damn day feeling like a failure. It never goes away, but you still have to make stuff.
I find for myself, the best way to overcome the imposter syndrome is to recognize your own triggers. For me, it often comes from comparing external, subjective measures of success, ex. "that game has more CCU than we do!".
I look at other creators and think, "how are they on their second, third, fourth game and we are still on our first", and "how are they so comfortable in front of their community", etc. It's a slippery slope. We all have our strengths, but you rarely acknowledge your own.
"Comparison is the thief of joy." For me, the triggers are all around making comparisons. The best thing is to just focus on what you are doing, do it the best you can, and ignore everything else. Everything else will take you down.
Whatever you are making, no matter how small or imperfect it feels -- it matters. Keep going. It may seem like something trivial and undeserving today, but it will become someone's favourite thing some day.
I'm not sure if the feeling ever goes away, but I know the only hope is in just going, doing, making. Don't give up. Your work matters. đź‘Ť
