Very disappointing events this weekend, its truly a shame to see people you look up to dismiss concerns of anti-blackness when all of that evidence is just right there for them to see, like right in the open... yikes
I see Black artists all the time have to hold their tongue to not be seen as aggressive or problematic, because it could affect future opportunities.
Me included.
I had an incident with my first #drawingwhileblack post in 2017.
As much positive attention it got, I had some not so nice DMs saying "blacks shouldn't be in the game industry" "no one wants you in their company" among other things 🙃
I deleted them bc it upset me at the time.
(It was also at the same time I was going through my internship transition cuz the program ran out of funding and I had to go back home 🥴 when it rains, it pours, right? 🥴🥴🥴)
It also taught me how to filter my DMs lol
But I didn't say anything bc I thought it would look like I was complaining, and I personally hate the thought of someone feeling sorry for me. But looking back at it now, I should have.
Stuff like this is always happening, and when it's brought out in the open, it's dismissed or turned back on the person bringing it up.
It happens every fucking time.
If you really want to support Black artists, don't just retweet our art. Speak up when we have concerns in the community, bc it's happening on an almost daily basis now.
I just wanted to get this off my chest cuz it's been pretty shitty holding this in all weekend.
Tomorrow is the start of Black History Month in the US, and I'm not going to let this ruin the entire month.
