Question for followers in farm country: have you heard of undivided interest, do you know of any families that use it, and where are you (or if you don't live in a farm area anymore, where was it that you encountered it)?
a note on how this is NOT heirs property, which is a completely different problem https://twitter.com/SarahTaber_bww/status/1356033674182070274

Also, I'll put a note out there that a lot of farming institutions keep trying to put heirs' property out there as the #1 reason Black farm families keep losing their land.

It's not. Land theft is the #1 reason Black farm families keep losing their land.
But boy the nice respectable whites sure love it when people buy the heirs' property excuse, bc then Black land loss just... happens! It's a perpetratorless crime!
It lets the nice traditional farm institutions claim they want to help Black farmers.... when their membership has a lot of the white families who've stolen Black land.
so yeah tl;dr undivided interest is a completely different problem from heirs' property- undivided interest is a problem people inflict on their own heirs by writing a bad will lol
Thanks everyone for the replies, I had a feeling it was 1) common 2) all over the US & this is helping a lot. (AUS & Canada too it turns out lol)
