I've taken some time to tweet this but here is my take on what is happening. In 2014 the Yes movement and the SNP in particular inspired many many thousands of people who wanted to be part of it's progressive ,equitable and inclusive vision. It certainly captured my heart 1>
and lifted me from feeling that I was a useless burden to my partner and children to being a productive and involved part of something that would change Scotland for the better. As a disabled activist I have fought hard to get the many barriers that we face in politics 2/
as well as in everyday life removed. Just as an aside, there is no such thing as Registered Disabled, no membership card is awarded, the vast majority of disabled people self id. It worries me that some people see this as being wrong, who would they like to decide? 3/
The DWP? Right now it wouldn't surprise me if some people in our movement thought that, reprehensible an idea as it is.
Many minority groups are extremely under represented at all levels of Scotland, particularly disabled people and those from BAME communities along with 4/
trans and non binary folk. I cannot for the life of me understand why people who were fighting for a fair, tolerant and inclusive country now think it is acceptable to attack those who are vulnerable and who were supposed to be protected in an Indy Scotland. 5/
I've not really been on Twitter much over the last 14 months as I have been seriously unwell and when I have ventured on it had become such a toxic environment that it affected my mental health extremely negatively. When I have been here I've been 6/
labelled as everything from Woke, Wokerati, a handmaiden, a rape apologist and a mens right activisit. Sometimes by men cheered on by women, the same women who shout out that any man who disagrees with the Gender Critical views as being a misogynist 7/
But apparently it is ok for those men who agree with them to attack women who don't. The toxic debate on here is absolutely shameful. It saddens me beyond belief. There may be discussions to be had (but not on Twitter) but they need to be had with thoughtfulness 8/
and if not kindness, then civility at the very least. I am not here to debate, I just need to express the heartbreak at what has become of us.
For those who are shouting about wanting their party back and that the younger members are ruining the party and not wanted? 9/
Seriously? Many of these members have worked harder than most, been all over the country campaigning and volunteering. They are our future and you do yourself no favours when you say such things. There is more to say but to be perfectly honest with you 10/
If you have read this far on my rambling thoughts I am amazed! I follow many people as I don't want to live in a bubble or an echo chamber. I ask everyone to do the same. Just listen (or read) to other opinions. Take a breath. Stand back and ask yourself if you are part 11/
of the problem or part of the solution. Approach it with some kindess and humanity.
That's me heading to bed now ( might be able to sleep after getting all this out) but this Woke Disabled Activist reaches out in friendship....how about you?
