🧵: It’s been a year since UBC declared a Climate Emergency and promised bold action to match the scale of the crisis. But will they commit? With two weeks before UBC chooses its climate agenda, we’re calling on the University to deliver on its promise. #UBCDeliver
How did we get here? 🧵Last September, more than 5,000 UBC students gathered for the #UBCClimateStrike. We called on the University to adopt a bold climate agenda.
We became one of the first Canadian Unis to commit to full fossil fuel divestment and declare a Climate Emergency. With that declaration, UBC promised to “directly face [the] challenges” of the climate crisis. This win was HUGE.🎉
This launched a year-long consultation process, where the UBC Climate Hub got input from 4,000+ students on how they envisioned UBC’s response. The result was a detailed action plan with 20+ recommendations for UBC. Here’s more on that: https://ubcclimatehub.ca/project/ubc-climate-emergency/
The recommendations are bold and necessary. They include cutting emissions on campuses, funding climate research, supporting student activism, and using UBC’s sway to stand with movements for divestment, land defense, and climate action. The full report comes out Feb 3rd.
Here’s where it gets messy: rather than acknowledge their responsibility to enact these recommendations, UBC Admin seems inclined to leave the recommendations untouched, and let the campus community take them on as they see fit.
🚨 This inaction stands entirely against UBC's declaration last year to address the crisis as an institution. 🚨
UBC needs to see that its students, staff, and faculty CARE that these recommendations are enacted, with sufficient funding and staff capacity to carry them out.
And lastly: tweet and post YOUR climate strike pics with #UBCDeliver! We went out and striked just for this moment. Let’s make it count!
