Some Sunday night random coffee trivia for you! Did you know that in the 18th century and even as recently as the 50s, some folks used to drink their coffee straight from a saucer? 1/4
Granted, the saucer was more of a small deep bowl and not your typical flat saucer of today. The thinking went back then that because the beverage was piping hot, one would pour it into a small deep dish to allow it cool off a little before you drink it. 2/4
It was George Washington who explained the existence of the Senate with the metaphor of pouring coffee into a saucer to cool it. Hot issues from the House could sit in the "senatorial saucer" to cool so that legislation could be tempered w/ wisdom of the country's elite. 3/4
Now there are so many cooler ways to drink your hot coffee beverage, slurping from a saucer is no longer the thing to do. In fact, we prefer our coffee hot. But you may choose to "cool" with milk or whipped cream. 4/4
