having some heavy feels today about inequity. redistributing cash (or trying to) is one of the most difficult parts of my work while also being one of the most important. Half of it is just poor people passing money & labor back & forth. This is, obviously, not redistribution.
We can keep each other alive (please, please let us keep each other alive🙏) but actual redistribution has to include money coming in from outside our community
Wealthy institutions, to which you can apply for funds, are designed to retain those funds and create intricate processes that are more barrier than access.
Rich people stay rich. They've built entire philosophies about why this is just. IRL it just looks like the ladies who used to buy lattes from me in this rich part of town that took an hour bus ride to get to. Only thing they clutched tighter than their yoga mats was tip money
In 2021 I just want to see an end to the deification of wealthy people giving away tiny portions of their wealth and calling it philanthropy while people stay homeless and hungry and without access to basic resources.
I want to see people giving their money away in ways that aren't tax deductible. Giving money away to actual people, to grassroots orgs that can't or don't want to be a 501c3
I want to see people filling the hands and cups and hats of people asking you for cash on the street, putting 20s in tip jars, I want you to get rid of "but how will they spend it?" I want you to let go of what you think the rules are
please, stop waiting to be "incentivized," stop demanding people drag out their trauma so you can have a *feeling* about who is "deserving," so you can go through GFM - the intervener who you trust more than direct payments it seems - and be the arbiter of who wins & who loses
and while you're doing all of that, please keep pressuring the government and institutions for greater equity of wealth distribution
just one example: in the question of how to better regulate these platforms on which we users create all of the monetized content AND have our data extracted, why are we more focused on suppressing & excluding SWs than we are on the cash platforms literally owe to SW labor
If you are so opposed to SW existing, I will tell you a secret: the only effective, and very simple, way of reducing the number of folks doing SW is to give people enough money to live
