Going to do a little Jared Goff thread for #OnePride Lions fans who want to know more about their 2021 starting Quarterback and just what we are getting in this trade.
(Shoutout @LionsRoyalty for this @Lions @JaredGoff16 edit)
First thing we are going to do is take a look at Goff’s passing chart this season.
As you can see, he is elite at throwing deep left, middle of the field within 20 yards, and around average everywhere except Deep Right and Deep Middle. This all points to being above average QB.
Here is an example of a Jared Goff deep ball. Yes, he is not Matthew Stafford and it will be a change of deep volume, but he has the potential to throw deep with sufficient arm strength, excellent touch/arc/trajectory, and good timing and placement to lead receivers.
Another element of the game Goff has is mobility. He’s not Lamar or Kyler, but he has the ability to escape the pocket, avoid sacks, and as we’ve seen on the last two plays is very fluid in his drops and elite play action sells. He is far from a statue, even if he’s not explosive
Here, Goff shows off the velocity and tight window throw ability he has to his game. He does a great job of, from an empty set, standing in the pocket and being patient, making his reads, making the right decision and executing a tight window throw with Timing and Velocity.
Here, we get to see a bit of his improvisational abilities. He’s obviously not Patrick Mahomes or anything, but he does a great job of avoiding the pressure, evading the rush, keeping his eyes down the field (into the end zone in this case) and making a moving, off platform throw
We get to see more of this here. Goff excels at play action passes, and thrives with utilizing tight ends, his addition will be AWESOME for TJ Hockenson who should be a featured part of the offense. Goff is comfortable with motion, spread sets, heavy sets, under center, all of it
In summary-
Goff is a capable player who has starting caliber traits at worst in every area needed for success at the NFL level.
He has capable/sufficient arm strength
Good decision making ability
Requisite mobility both in and out of pocket
Comfort with all forms/sets
Accuracy.
While he does not get an elite grade for me in any area (his highest grade is an A- in Accuracy), he also does not get any grades below a B in my grades either. He is balanced, and while he doesn’t have Allen’s arm, Lamar’s mobility, Brady’s Decision Making or Brees accuracy...
He has shown that he CAN do all of those things, most of them consistently, and knows how to spread the ball around to RB’s, TE’s, 4-5 WR’s, allows for a full route tree within 30 yards, and can execute all basic concepts from any set, formation, with motion in and out of pocket.
Oh, and one more thing, a change of scenery could help him. Getting out of LA and the pressure of going deep in the playoffs every year in that market could be good for him. There will be a chip on his shoulder following this trade, and he is used to working with new coaches.
All in all, I’m really looking forward to seeing Jared Goff in Detroit next year as a Detroit Lion. We got some work to do at WR this offseason to give him some capable targets, but I think he will be a solid QB for us at least this year and maybe longer. Now lets build a team!:)
Hopefully you guys learned a thing or two from this one. Going to be breaking down more Goff film on YouTube for Prospect Central 101 Tuesday at Midnight Eastern for those who want to see more! :)
For now though, that concludes this thread. Hope yall have a nice rest of your day!
