Ben Davies is a really interesting signing. Based on Wyscout data, he’s the most accurate long passer in the Championship amongst qualifying CBs & his pass accuracy is impressive overall. That’s where he stands out from the data - clearly cognisant of missing VVD’s long balls
Overall this makes sense - Liverpool are normally dominant in possession & adding a centre-back who can accurately switch the ball to Trent in space is a key part of shifting the ball to enable Trent to deliver whilst the opponent’s block is delivering.
Demonstrates how Liverpool are placing on emphasis on their centre-backs’ on ball ability (again understandable given their possession numbers & style), which was quite clear when Rhys Williams was being selected
Defensive numbers are also noteworthy, but they can be particularly volatile so even harder (than on-ball data) to take much away from without watching the player.
For £2m, LFC are getting someone who appears to excel in an area in which they've been lacking since VVD went down. FB experience may also mean he's more capable defending in space. Identifying specific skillsets that can be maximised is so important, keen to see how it goes
