1/ As we sit on the threshold of WIHM, I want to reach out to those who maybe don’t see the point of this. A few years back Stephanie Drury challenged me to look at the books I’d read over the last year and see how many were by anything other than white men.
2/ I thought I was a pretty enlightened guy and took the challenge. I quickly realized I had read almost nothing but. Not out of any bad intention but just not really thinking about it.
3/ So I challenged myself over the next year that at least 50 percent of what I read would be not-white- dude.
4/ And it was the single greatest thing I ever did to broaden my reading and my writing.
5/ One thing I learned is that most of my favorite fiction is written by women. And I wasn’t trying to avoid that. I reiterate that if you aren’t mindful to this you can easily find the default to just keep reading white guys.
So if you feel skeptical about this, find yourself cynical about it being PC or virtue signaling or whatever, I’ll challenge you like I was challenged. Look at what you’ve been reading and just consider for a moment the rich spectrum of lived experience that you may be missing
@StuffCCLikes because I want to acknowledge the impact you had on my life and if I can talk one skeptical male into following suit maybe in some small way I can repay this debt.
