Managers: have you ever criticized a report for not wanting to be there, not being enthusiastic enough about the job, or only wanting to be there for the money? If so, why?

Non-managers: Have you ever gotten this feedback? If so, what did you do?

RT for reach :)
I can start an expletive filled rant about why this feedback is problematic.

But I'm *trying* to see if there's another way of looking at it. Because it's not the first time, or the first job, where I've been told something like this.
I'm open to the idea that I might be the problem. But I still think that I shouldn't have to sing & dance every time I go to work to show that I'm invested in being there

& I'm pretty sure that I'd be less likely to get this feedback if I weren't Black, a non-man, & an introvert
Also, jobs are for money. That's literally what they are for. It is how most adults survive under capitalism. We don't have much of a choice.

It's ok if your primary reason for working at your job is the money.

It's ok if money is your ONLY reason.
These replies are really helpful!

A few of you brought up a good point: that if an employee isn't enthusiastic enough, maybe there's something wrong with the working environment.

Maybe the company/manager/team doesn't deserve their enthusiasm.
Yeah, I guess I've had some issues with my company/manager that may contribute to my lack of enthusiasm. I didn't make this connection until now.

I wish my manager had said "let's talk about what's wrong" instead of "I need you to prove you're here for more than just the money"
Also a really good point. There are times when I've been really invested in my work but my manager just didn't see it. Probably because what investment/enthusiasm looks like to him is different than what it looks like to me https://twitter.com/kyhwana/status/1355979856572411907
