For some reason in medical education...
a 🧵 on disability and chronic illness in medicine.

For some reason in medical education they don't teach us the weight that diagnoses have. I only learned that from being a patient & feeling it myself. When I was allowed to have certification that I deserved care for what I was going through. Medicine deemed my struggles legit?
For some reason in medical education they don't teach us the burden that gets lifted when we get diagnosed as adults with something that has been with us our whole life. The gatekeeping of the medical profession, the sloppy/lazy workups with no answers. The years of wondering.
For some reason in medical education they don't emphasize how we are gatekeepers with power that can cause immense harm. A right diagnosis can help folks access resources & understand conditions but the wrong diagnosis (or even WORDING) can doom records & future access to care.
For some reason in medical education they don't value disabled voices or experiences. They don't seek out disabled people to encourage to become physicians. They don't provide any means of infrastructure or support for disabled medical students. The reason for all this is ableism
And if you have yet to receive a real diagnosis: your pain, your struggles, your difficulties in navigating this broken system are still valid. Physicians are often wrong. They aren't trained well to treat chronic illnesses & are seemingly never allowed to have one themselves.
