Video calls will kill our need for mobility. I'm not so sure. As a technology lover I was very shocked to discover I hate video calls. I find them exhausting and frustrating. I now avoid them unless there is no option. I know I'm far from alone in that.
We are a year into this nightmare and I still routinely participate in calls where the first 15 minutes are troubleshooting technical problems.
I recently compared my 2020 and 2021 diaries for January and I'm having far more meetings now, despite actively trying to avoid them. I suspect we're having many more meetings just because we can and not because we should.
I am lucky that I have a good home office set up and limited noise interference. But I see and hear the experiences of other people. Also when I've had intermittent noise outside the stress of remembering to mute and unmute is not something I want to be part of.
Huge problem for me is they are rubbish for certain kinds of meeting. Especially meeting new people. You simply don't get the non-verbal feedback you get from real world interaction. You also can't see how others react to each other.
In real world new person meetings you can take note of who sits near each other, who interacts with each other etc. That is lost with video calls. You don't really meet the people at all.
And real world meeting create opportunities to have ancillary conversations that might be more important than the main event. This isn't replicated in anything online.
