Some energy equivalence: On Friday, about 56 billion cubic feet of natural gas was delivered just to the US residential and commercial sectors, much of it for winter heating. That's the energy equivalent of 700 Gigawatts of electric power capacity running full bore for 24 hours.
Last Friday wasn't even close to the peak day for gas deliveries. The current record for gas flows to the residential and commercial sectors was 79 Bcf during the January 2019 polar vortex.
To be clear, this is not a statement of the electrical requirements to meet gas heating demand that's electrified. That would require much more analysis and many more assumptions. My tweet was intended simply to illustrate the scale of gas energy delivered on a normal winter day.
