Up, down, through! Trout's tempo is fast so his up starts a little later. He talks about "down" being important to him... So that he can get through. Timing.
His start is stable here (back leg grounded), very little movement to get started. When he shifts more or rotates in to start, his "down" will be off and he uses too much time and his down is late.
He doesn't hold the front leg up to see. He's seeing as he puts it down. He still has his back leg and yes its working and yes the two legs work together.
Through! You can't get to have "through" if you use all your time up with "up." Hitting is a timed event. You get x amount of time from start to finish to hit a ball. Holding your up and adding a loading xyz move= late. Late will mean you can't adjust and cover.
Up -can't express enough how valuable lifting from the foot is instead of the hip/upper. First move - peel the heel. Like you're peeling up velcro from the floor from the heel to the toe. No reach, no upper body move first, no shift. If you can do this, your set up is right.
Top of kick is at pitch release.
The rhythm and tempo is a blended move, not a gather pause, or a hover, or a double move. Up "go" and down "land balanced" in time. Lands the neutral line as well to set his direction. All blended together.
Adjustable and getting through. He gave himself time. If you don't feel the back side getting though balls, you're late. The goal is to feel enough time to do directional/ adjustable/ damage. Give yourself time. Simplify in the context of time.
We need be athletic within a time constraint. GO SEE the BALL!
