Let's take a quick look at Jethro (Yitro) in this week's Exodus narrative.

Remember, Jethro is not only Moses' father in-law, but is a Priest of an idolatrous Midian, a job that makes many commentators queasy!

And they ignore that he admits:

Jethro appearances are sprinkled throughout the Book of Exodus. They were likely inserted by an assortment of authors.

The reason that I say that is that the father in-law of Moses is referred to by a number of different names.

here are so many different expressions about the father in-law that apologists treat seem him as if he was in the Midianite Witness Protection Program!

Some, like YTRO vs YTR are obviously simple scribal errors.

But most are not.

It should be noted that while Exodus storytellers were fond of Midian, the storytellers in Numbers & Deuteronomy despised Midian. This could reflect different periods with changing national views.

Most commentators try to hold a positive view of Jethro.

Finally, once Jethro catches up with Moses and gives him back his wife and sons, which Moses seems to have intended to leave them behind, there's no point in keeping the character around, and so he leaves and returns to continue being the priest of Midian.
