Catching up on debates. Aware that there are Home Office proposals to remove the term ‘honour’ in recording of crimes, such as FM, CC, FGM and other crimes. Would be a mistake to remove this label and would be detrimental to victims - it could also lead to abuse being undetected.
First, we should always look at the language & views of victims. If they call it ‘honour’ based abuse, then we should keep it that way. Don’t disempower victims by removing labels they use or are familiar with. Removal will mean victims won’t come forward or recognise their abuse
HBVA is already hidden and underreported as it is, don’t further disempower victims by removing labels - this will only make it more hidden and damage victim confidence, as well as not validating their experiences.
