A new writer asked me questions abt publishing. I am sharing my responses here, in a series of threaded tweets.

Here is the 1st question:
.
HOW IMPORTANT IS A SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE IN THE LIKELIHOOD OF GETTING PUBLISHED? 1/6

MY RESPONSE:

For fiction writers, the thing that matters is STORY. Can you tell a good story? Is your story unique and compelling and something that is different?

Also, is there a market demand or social need for the type of story you tell? 2/6

Another consideration is the editor's/imprint's current list of books that will be published by them. They will look at how your story adds to their current list.
.
Those are some of the key factors that publishers use to decide whether to publish your book. 3/6

After that, publishers/agents will check out your social media presence to get to know you better, even if you can't know everything about a person by their social media.

They will check you out online. 4/6

After looking at your social media, they may ask themselves: "Is this the type of person I want to work with?"
.
Maybe they will. Maybe they won't. It depends on their personal preference. We all want to work with people we like (or would like) 5/6

I don't think you need a big social media presence to get published in fiction (again, it's all about the STORY), but having one certainly doesn't hurt.
