Vaccines offer AMAZING protection from COVID-19. But if you do get sick, do they protect you from severe illness?

At first glance, yes: ZERO hospitalizations for COVID in trial pts who got vaccine. But, so few even got sick; how sure can we be?

On closer look: also YES…

(Overly?) simple sum of severe cases in placebo (P) vs vax (V) in trials:

Pfizer/BNT: 9 of 162 P, 1 of 8 V (not hosp)
Moderna: 30 of 185 P, 0 of 11 V
AZ: 10 of 101 P, 0 of 30 V
Novavax: 2 of 85 P, 0 of 21 V

TOT: 51/533 cases (9.6%) severe in P, 1/70 (1.4%) in V, p~0.01

(no J&J b/c no numbers in press release, but w 0 hosp in vaccine recipients, that would only help)

This is NOT a careful meta-analysis, just back-of-the-✉️, but looks like vaccines greatly reduce risk of getting sick, and even IF sick, greatly reduce risk of severe illness.
