WHY REX XENOBLADE IS A GOOD BOY BY ME
I wanted to put together my thoughts in a handy little twitter thread for you all since I recieved a lot of interest, thank you!

Spoilers for all of Xenoblade 2
In total I feel like Rex is a character that largely goes underappreciated by people since all the other characters seem to have more vibrant personalities which I think is fair!
I feel as if his character is what makes the narrative work because ultimately, the story is about finding the value and meaning in your own life and that everyone deserves yes, even you. Rex as a character serves as an opposition to the others who hate themselves and the world.
Contrary, he doesn’t hate himself, far from it. Instead of reacting to the tragedy around him with anger as to why, he goes forward. He believes the world can be saved. He doesn’t become more cynical and bitter. It’s not in his character
But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t grow or change. Part of the story is how he and Addam are different in that he accepts Pyra and Mythra fully. He believes that they are good even if they don’t themselves.
He attempts to understand them and connect, despite how nervous he is, something they never had, which led them to believe they weren’t worthy to live
I really like this scene, because it’s incredibly cheesy. At the end of the day, he puts his faith in them that they can all save the world this time, something Addam could never truly do.
Its his acceptance that leads to both basically becoming enlightened which is physically represented by Rex’s outfit going from a diver’s to an astronaut’s. Once Pyra and Mythra overcome their own insecurities, they literally ascend to godhood
I like how it all ties into the game’s overall statement, at the end of the day, Rex is able to help truly lost people like Pyra and Mythra find their way and purpose
He can’t save everybody though, and he doesn’t. Pyra and Mythra could have very easily been like Malos, someone so lost and hateful they take it out on the world around them. Instead of coming to the conclusion he has to die, he decides everyone else may.
Rex is finally able to get through to him, although, he dies without ever truly getting the chance to “live” in his own terms. That is one of the inherit tragedies of this story.
I feel like a lot of people cite him being a good character because he does a ton of admirable things, like working at a young age to send money home to his village, but I really didn’t want my previous points to go ignored, which I why I decided my thread would be about this.
He’s a good character because he ties all the themes of the game together, without him, and a character exactly like him, the overall message would fall flat. He is very well conceived in that respect
