Two things can be true:

1. Joe always meant "$2000 checks" to be the $600 + $1400.

2. That was communicated in a confusing way to the public, and the result is an understandable expectation of "checks that say $2000 on them", in part because of literal pictures of said checks.
This rallying cry of "but *I* always knew the $2000 meant TOTAL" just means "I was tuned into Joe's head enough to understand what he meant."

Good! Really, good for you! That doesn't mean the public perception didn't go in another direction. We have to deal with that now.
Political blunders and mis-speaks USUALLY have some backstory of "Well, if you understand the situation-".

My Dad was incensed for years that Dan Quayle was unfairly sunk over a potato. ("Was he supposed to CORRECT a TEACHER and look like an ASSHOLE?")
When you know the backstory, it can be very frustrating to see people criticize your team--the best team we have right now, really--for their messaging.

But, like, the messaging fucked up. We need to honor the "$2000 checks" in the best possible light.
"It wasn't REALLY a broken promise so the people warning that it LOOKS like a broken promise are wrong/gaslighting me" is not true or useful when we're talking about a messaging fuckup.
I'm plugged into politics WAY more than the people I know in facespace and *I* was expecting checks with $2000 on them!

If I was expecting that and I'm in, like, the 90th percentile of Plugged In Voters, then yeah, there was Some Confusion That Happened.
Also: I'm sorry, but a lot of you are like "if we give people more money due to a messaging error, the Dirtbag Left win!!!" and you need to...log off and rethink your priorities. I'm sorry, but you do.

People need this money. Who cares if That Online Guy gets a "win" out of it?
It would be nothing but good for everyone if the Dems said "We've heard your concerns and realize you need more, so we've decided to cut $2000 actual checks for you, here they are".
Digging in on the $1400 now so that they can claim to have been consistent all along isn't gonna win votes, and it's NOT going to convince the people who *feel* lied to that they weren't lied to.
