I’m hearing concerning news from the international human rights community about the #ICC. The new chief prosecutor is about to be elected for a 9 year term, and many have reservations about a candidate who has quickly risen through the ranks: @KarimKhanQC
Advocates believe that the U.S., Israel, U.K. & Germany are pushing for @KarimKhanQC because he may shut down the ICC investigations into U.S. war crimes in Afghanistan and Israeli war crimes in Palestine. We need to know where this candidate stands on at least these two issues.
In addition, a group of local African organizations bravely sent a private letter to ICC Member State Leadership earlier this month about @KarimKhanQC’s work in Kenya. The letter alleges potential ethical improprieties & conflicts of interest.
The Bureau should have made this letter public for all to see, but they didn’t. It was given to me, and you can find it below. A source reveals that some of these same concerns may have arisen in Iraq, where @KarimKhanQC serves as Special Advisor. He must address these issues.
It is critical that all candidates be appropriately vetted, civil society consulted & the election proceed transparently & fairly. cc @fidh_en @4GenderJustice @ngos4justice @atlas_women @hrw @amnesty @Young_Grotius @sevslv @multilateralist @philclark79 @pilabuda @JamesAGoldston
