The following tweet was put out about me by an anonymous medical student account on 12/17/20.
I have never interacted with this account in my life.
They are not now, nor have they ever been my student.
This post caused me considerable personal distress this Christmas.

The idea that men can not be harassed by women is a fallacy.
You don’t need a paper to tell you that this is the case. It is easily observable.
The idea that attendings can not be harassed and abused by those who are still in training or in pre medical classes is a fallacy.

The idea that attendings/others are just going to lie back & tolerate abuse is at once absurd & naive in the extreme.
Given all the recent discussions regarding the need for anonymous accounts, I thought we should discuss some realities:
Some anonymous accounts are harrassers.

Harassment is never ok.
Whether by a named account.
Whether by an “anonymous” account.
To me, this would seem self-evident.
Apparently, it is not.
But know this, receipts are kept.
Actions have consequences.
You are not the victim when you are harassing others.

On medtwitter, there is often a demand for binary thinking, easy solutions, easy slogans, catchy hashtags.
The far easier solution might just be:
Don’t be an ass
Don’t say something to a trainee/attending that you wouldn’t say to their face.
It’s harassment.

Now I’m sorry to anyone who has followed me this last year.
I really am.
It’s exhausting reading about the harassment.
I know it.
Imagine living with it.
It caused me acute anxiety.
Bad.
I have 100’s of similar screenshots.
All horrible vitriolic abuse.

Thank you for sticking with my account.
I speak up not looking for pity.
I’m a grown ass man.
I’m speaking up for others who might mot be as strong or as stubborn as I am.
Attendings are killing themselves too.
Be the grace.
Be the empathy.
Stop the harassment.
