State surveillance of independence supporters was about * turning Puerto Ricans against each other * to preserve US interests in the region.

You can't understand Puerto Rico 's status debate w/o learning of the * deadly multigenerational govt suppression of the independence movement.

US statehood supporters weren't surveilled , jailed & killed for their beliefs
