My father-in-law had his first vaccination shot on Fri. We asked if they explained that he still needed to protect himself and others. He said, âNo, but they provided a leafletâ. He did not read the leaflet. Communication is key to enhancing the protection offered by vaccines.
Long-standing evidence shows low levels of public engagement and understanding of patient information leaflets. We cannot assume that a vaccination leaflet is any more effective. Vaccinating without effective communication is akin to fighting with one hand tied behind your back.
Listening to other experiences, including experiences before my father-in-law had his jab, I wondered if you received the leaflet as well as verbal communication. A leaflet is only of use if they read and understand it.
