1. #Winterof1968. My grandfather was in the habit of writing dairies, recording what was of importance to him. From these voluminous dairies am sharing some of his observations from what seems to have been an equally harsh winter in 1968, especially chilla khurd.

2.“The chilla khured started from 31-1-68, ie, Wednesday. It has proved worse than Chilla Kalan. The severity of cold started from 2-2-68. On 3-2-68 (Saturday) the temperature came down to minus eleven degrees below the freezing point. Today i.e, Sunday (4-2-68) the severity

3. of cold continues unabated. Meat & other essential things have become scarce & the prices are shooting up. The temperature between the night of Sunday & Monday (between 4 & %the February) was minus 12 centigrade the coldest night so far experienced(Announced by radio Kashmir)"

4.“This winter Kashmir experienced first snowfall on http://2-12-67.It  was followed by severe cold the temperature going down below the freezing point between 4th & 5th February the temperature was minus 12 centigrade. The intensity of cold continued from 2-12-67 to 15-2-68

5. The grip of cold relaxed from 16-2-68. Up to this date (16-2-68) the snow had fallen fourteen times. Such a severity of winter & prolonged intense cold has not been experienced within the living memory. The snow which fell on 26-12-67 still exits on the surface of earth”.

6. “ On 17-2-68. I went to see Hakim sahib at Baghat. Although the sky was cloudy, the day was warm. This was the first time after three months that I went out of my house’.
“18-2-68. It is again very cold today. The temperature must be below freezing point. Kashmir radio

7. announced that the temperature was minus 1 centigrade”.
“19-2-68. This is the last day of chilla khured. A mild snowfall has started. Temperature in the morning was minus two centigrade as announced by the radio in the morning of 19-2-68.

8. The tribunal set up for Rann Kutch has given its award. It is favourable to Pakistan which will acquire 350 sq. miles. India does not appear satisfied”.

9. "20-2-68. Our kitchen pipe remained closed since 26-12-67 due to snowfall. The water started to come in the pipe from 21-2-68. It remained closed for 57 days”.
"Heavy snowfall on 10th Muharam 1388 (?) corresponding to 9th April 1968 (Tuesday)".
