Kicking off our day of #DoItForTheGirls with ⁦ @KarlaHayward⁩ who is sharing with our young women how campaigns work, what it’s like to run, and some of the things to think about when you decide to run for election. So exciting!!!
@KarlaHayward describes her campaign team and asks the girls to think about who in their lives might help them and make sacrifices to support their campaigns if they ran. Shockingly, not one of them suggested that their mom would drop everything to help. 😱
One of the most exciting parts of this convo (to me) is a discussion of the data being marshalled to track & understand how voters are engaging with the candidate. #WeAreLearningSoMuch #DoItForTheGirls
Quinn (age 11) asks how the campaign decides who to call or where to knock on doors & the team shows us a stack of names & addresses provided by @NLElections of voters living in the district. The girls have tons of really good questions & the team is being so generous w/answers.
Maybe the best thing so far is listening to the girls ask @KarlaHayward deeply personal questions eg “do you think deciding to run as a candidate is changing who you are as a person?” & God love her she answers it honestly. Acknowledging emotions exist is huge. #DoItForTheGirls
Killin it with smart questions, Kate (age 17) asks @KarlaHayward “what does the party do for you” when you decide you want to run? “How do they help you?” This varies so heavily and is one of the biggest challenges for new (esp women) candidates.
Kate dives in further to ask whether parties support sitting ministers versus new candidates 🔥🔥🔥 and we all agree we’re not sure how parties make these decisions and Neko (age 8) follows up with “would you run again?” and we seem to agree that perseverance is a great quality.
A mom jumps in to ask @KarlaHayward whether her campaign experience is affected by the fact that she’s a woman. We are now engaged in a rousing convo about financial networks and resources and I’m in my happy place.
Kate asks how we can encourage young people to get involved in politics and thinking about voting and elections. Neko starts to fidget and @KarlaHayward promises that we can start phoning voters in a couple mins.
Neko (age 8) “is it stressful to try to get a lot of votes?” Karla: yes, yes it is.
FINALLY! The moment the girls have been waiting phone. @KarlaHayward is giving them a tutorial on how to call voters.
Best part of this is when the girls were confused by the phone. “Ummmm how do we even use this? do we pick it up and THEN dial?!” #youngsters
We have switched over to our second candidate, @kristinaennis, who is explaining to the girls how door to door canvassing works. Gearing up@to knock on doors, we’re gonna #DoItForTheGirls
Girls took a break to slide down the hill at @kristinaennis campaign headquarters.
Quinn is getting a lesson on perfect “door knocker” (aka flyer) placement in mailboxes when folks aren’t home. There’s a technique! Gotta do it right.
Neko impatiently suggests @kristinaennis’s campaign manager is not moving quickly enough, ushers her to get to the next house.
The girls have devised a system: one knocks, one rings the bell, one registers the address with the campaign manager, one hands a flyer. They’re getting into it.
Neko so excited after the last house she flew down the driveway and gave me a chest bump. This is new for us. @kristinaennis campaign bringing out all the enthusiasm.
Big shoutout to the man who opened his door wide open (after putting his shirt on) & then wanted to banter with the kids about why candidates were/weren’t great and gave them tips on how to sell their candidate at the door. #SoMuchLearning
The moms were excited to see local journalist and celebrity @MikeConnors at the door. He explained that he couldn’t tell them who he was voting for because of his job. Then we had a big convo about professional neutrality in journalism and some other jobs (like mine).
Then we stumbled upon CNA journalism student Patrick, who is working on a story about first time candidates. He walked with us for a while, asked @kristinaennis some questions, snapped some pics. #ThereIsLearningGoingOn #DoItForTheGirls
Small drizzly debacle when the girls let the clipboard contents fly down the road (sorry @kristinaennis) and then decided they were ready to do some houses by themselves. 😂
We’re finishing up our canvassing with @kristinaennis but before we do a wardrobe change (we are wet and very cold!) The girls are doing some cartwheels in the street. After lunch we’re gonna head to @Sheilagholeary headquarters for our last campaign of the day. #DoItForTheGirls
