#DOC Heads up about the COVID vaccine.

First I am SUPER grateful to have been vaccinated if this is any indication what my experience w/ COVID would have been.

Also I know people w/ #T1D that had virtually no reaction to the vaccine or the virus. 1/
1st vaccine: I had no reaction other than a very sore arm.

2nd: 12hr after I felt categorically terrible. Body aches, chills, fever, HA, nausea. My #diabetes went completely off the rails! I haven’t been this high or had this much difficulty managing in a long time. 2/
4x my normal basal insulin to try to target 175. It was no joke to manage.

36hrs I started feeling better & my insulin requirements started to go down.

Just short of 48hrs: Not back to normal BGs/insulin but 1000x better. Tired & very sore arm but so much better. 3/
The vaccine DOES NOT CAUSE COVID. But it does by design cause an immune response.

Immune response insulin resistance can reverse quickly. Take care not to have too much IOB when that happens to avoid severe hypo.

4/
So #DOC get the COVID vaccine when available!! I would certainly do it again knowing how severe COVID can be for those of us w/ #T1D. But be prepared for all possibilities. Follow sick day guidelines after both doses. Can happen w/ Pfizer & Moderna. Get help if needed.
