Residency and Bed bugs!

I got hauled up during residency for putting an actual photo of our duty room and complaining about bed bugs and the poor living conditions to our FB Alumni group. My friends & seniors were quick to warn about the repercussions of my post. 1/n
I persisted and refused to back down- perhaps foolishly at the time. Our Prof next day was angry at my post and asked me to take it down-which I did. To his credit he heard me outbut scolded me that I made something within the work family so public. I apologised. 2/n
I was being unkind to the institution that was giving me so much and amazing mentors who still wish me well. Yet despite that, they didn't push me under the bus or ruin my career which they easily could. I was outspoken and a rabble rouser but they never let bad blood linger 3/n
Eventually we got AirCon, New cots, new mattresses, mosquito nets and a monthly roster among residents for the responsibility to maintain the duty room and keep it clean.

They listened despite my apparent petulance 4/n
In 2016, when I last visited my institute I was pleasantly surprised that the residency duty room remains spic and span. The Professor who reprimanded me was at the canteen having lunch. He called me in, fed me sweets and introduced me to the residents who were at the table, 5/n
"This is the man who was responsible for the facilities in your duty room" and turned to me telling me that now the residents were demanding a separate TV, Computer and WiFi in the duty room. I smiled knowingly and was glad that someone's still fighting the good fight. 6/n
I know that things could have turned out differently in another part of India for the decisions I took & I might be writing a different unhappy story. However if we all keep quiet & accept whatever comes our way without question, things will never change for better. 7/7
This story thread was prompted by another sad story which took a different turn and the attending there was petty enough to try to ruin someone's career. 8/8 https://twitter.com/ShawnteJamesMD/status/1355578152647598086?s=20
