I think the Dubai-scandal has really highlighted the huge discrepancy between an ‘Influencer’ and someone well-off who has followers. We need to re-jig the term influencer because it isn’t wholly bad when attached to people who use the internet for good, to educate and inspire.
When do you become an ‘Influencer’. When you’ve been on a reality tv show? When you’re paid to post about detox teas? When you have over 5k followers? There are a *huge* variety of people, young people, helping others online through their content and using socials for good.
We cannot tarnish every person with over a certain amount of followers online with the same brush. Some of these ‘influencers’ do not try and influence their following past buying a BOOHOO Man tracksuit and joining an MLM travel scheme.
Others will spend hours creating and editing their content and getting no pay back because they want to connect with their followers and try do some good in the World. They appreciate the value in their following & the platform they have to do good. Not all ‘Influencers’ are bad.
Just bcos you can afford to go to Dubai in a pandemic and live your best life, doesn’t mean you have too. *IF* you cared about ‘influencing’ ofc. If you are a well-off person with followers, you’ll do what you want because you don’t care about ur audience. There’s the difference.
