The conversation around the mental health crisis in children and young people (CYP) is relevant and important. But the assumption that this is solely caused by schools being ‘closed’ is too simplistic. 1/
CYP have spent almost a yr experiencing unpredictably, uncertainty, bereavement, worry about family members. There have been hopes dashed & plans cancelled, they’ve been persistently told that exam grades are crucial to achieve in life & are now being told not to worry about them 2/
CYP need socialisation, human interaction, hope, purpose, meaningful relationships with peers, self fulfilment, adults who champion them. 3/
For some CYP, school offers these things, but for others they reap them from sports clubs, music groups, art clubs, the skate park, parties, informal play dates etc. These valuable interactions have all been removed from them too. 4/
Therefore to consistently focus on schools reopening does not take into account the multiple layers of what CYP need to thrive. Many children have in fact thrived away from a classroom environment. 5/
If the priority was genuinely about mental health there would be numerous campaigns & headlines supporting opening up grass roots sports that can be held outdoors as well as unlocking children’s playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts and skate parks. Listening to CYP! End
