#1. Relevance.
I can imagine this is not what you expected to be no 1. But the truth is, one way to win a negotiation is to understand what the other person is trying to achieve.
So, in the case of Search Engines, all they really want is to refer the best links to their users

So, my no 1 tip for you is to make sure your HEADLINE (or meta title) is inline w/the actual copy (content) on your site which is relevant to "search query"
Typically, search engines display three things [see attached image]:
- (meta) Title
- (meta) Description
- (canonical) URL

#2. Fine-tune.
Now that you know what shows up on Search Engine Results Page (SERP), fine-tune your content to fit perfectly.
My submission is: "Write for humans (relevance), optimise for bots".
You can't optimise for bots if you don't understand how they work.

So, for instance, with Meta Data.
Your Title should not be more than 70 characters
Your Description should not be more than 156 characters
Then, for URL, remove stop words and prepositions. Clean it up to have just the keywords. And it should not be too long five words fine.

#7. Don't attempt to game the system
There so many factors that Google's Algorithm considers when deciding what to rank on the SERP.
So, trying to game the system by belabouring one approach, will backfire.
For instance, do not over-stuff your article with keywords
