About 2 million Messi jerseys are sold each year at prices ranging from $100 to $200. 
Teams typically net 15% of apparel proceeds, so Barça expects about $45 million (€37 million) from jersey sales alone. 
Now assuming each of the club’s starting eleven is responsible for an equal proportion of those sales, Messi would be worth about $87 million or €71 million [that figure includes jersey sales].
Considering the fact that Messi’s contribution to ticket sales, media rights and sponsorships is really more than double the average Barcelona player, Messi could be worth about $175 million [€145 million] a year.
Transfermarkt has pegged Messi’s value at $198 million [€164 million] in 2018. They currently rate Messi at $127 million [€111 million].
Social media interaction and engagement goes off the scale whenever Barca tweets or posts in Instagram or Facebook about Messi, and the €66M from this doesn't seem so vulgar after all.
Barcelona earns more than €300M a year for Messi, i.e. because of Messi, Barcelona has earned more than €1.2B in the last 4 years. This means Barcelona has profited more than €700M in the last 4 years only because of Messi. Messi takes 1/3rd of the revenue he generates.
All these approximations put Messi-generated revenue at €145 million. Now anyone with a decent amount of knowledge in basic math would know that the figure €145 million, a year far exceeds the figure of €138 million which El Mundo claims to be Messi's yearly wage.
I guess it's clear now that Messi contributes a lot more to the club finances than he earns but the club management will never release these figures.
This is nothing but a disgraceful attempt by the current board to defame Leo and cover their own mistakes and inefficiencies by transferring the blame onto their star player who has been carrying the club for so long and in my opinion, deserves every penny that he earns.
