A thread......

Flights:

Currently UK to India flights are limited to 30 a week. The only options are direct flights from London to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad.

Air India has 15 of the 30 flights and the remaining 15 is split between BA,Virgin & Vistara
Check in:

I arrived Heathrow at 05:30 for a 08:45 flight. There was a long queue as checkin

I was asked to show my completed self declaration form, I was asked to fill a small form at check in and present a hard copy of my negative Covid results. 3 things in total
My booking was London to Amritsar with a 22 hour connection in Delhi.

At check in your luggage is only checked in to Delhi and you have to check in again in Delhi for domestic flight

The desk did not ask for a reason of travel and handed me my boarding pass
At the gate a temperature check was done. If you are assigned a middle seat air India issue you with a PPE suit and all passengers have to wear a face visor.

Once on board you must sit in allocated seat with PPE on. Kids are exempt from PPE
A pre-packed breakfast box was on the seat as we boarded. A hot meal was served approx 5-6 hours after take off. Take some food and snacks with you as there is a gap and the portions are small.
On board you must complete 4 forms so take a pen. These forms are a repeat of the self declaration form done online but for some reason you have to complete this forms manually on the flight. In order to avoid Delhi 7 day quarantine you must enter an Non Delhi address
Upon arrival a announcement is asking any passengers with a connecting flight to come off the plane first. Anyone whose final destination is Delhi are asked to remain on board for 7 day hotel transfer.
Once off board you are escorted to a security desk where they check your boarding pass and review you online filled and hand filled forms

You then proceed to the testing area and make a payment of 3400 rupees via cash or card. Here they use the data from the forms you filled
Once payment complete they take you to test area and a person takes a small swab of mouth and nose

Once swab done you are asked to go to waiting area. They call it a lounge but it’s not a lounge it’s a airport waiting gate but tea, coffee, water and a meal are provided
You then have to wait 4-6 hours for everyone’s results to come back.

Once all results come back negative you are split into groups of 20 and escorted out of the waiting area towards the baggage hall.

There are multiple checkpoints and immigration is done in Delhi
After multiple checkpoints you proceed to baggage hall to collect you luggage and then are escorted to a further private check in area for UK flyers only.

Here you check in for your connecting air India flight and are issued mew boarding passes and luggage is checked in
Once check in complete you are escorted to departures and you passport is returned.

We had a 22 hour gap until our connecting Amritsar. we still had 15 hours remaining so we booked into the Holiday in express hotel located in the airport. 12,000 rupees for 12 hours
We then checked out the hotel and was escorted to domestic flights security by hotel staff. We then went through security and proceeded to our gate for Amritsar flight. All shops and cafes are open in Delhi airport
Again for Amritsar flight PPE is issued.

Upon landing in Amritsar we went straight to baggage hall as immigration was already done in Delhi.

We collected our luggage and proceeded to exit.

No isolation advice was mentioned in Amritsar
Overall it is a very long journey.

Key points:

1.Allow a 10 hour gap between connecting flight
2. Aslong as you have a booked connecting flight and test negative you can travel to your destination.
